Turning Around a Struggling Care Home

How Mantra Training helped a 60-bed care home improve care standards and staff confidence following an Inadequate CQC rating.

At Mantra Training, we take client confidentiality seriously. To protect the privacy of those we work with, we ensure that all identifying features are omitted from our case studies. Each case study reflects how we’ve helped businesses, care homes, and organisations achieve their goals through tailored, engaging, and effective training.

A 60-bed care home specialising in dementia care, nursing, and residential support recently faced a serious challenge. Following a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, the home received an Inadequate rating, with specific concerns raised about governance, leadership, and overall care delivery. The report reflected issues that had developed over time, particularly due to the home’s instability at the management level. Over the past two years, the care home had experienced a high turnover of short-term managers, which led to inconsistencies in training, a lack of staff development, and low morale across the team.

With a follow-up inspection looming, the senior leadership team reached out to Mantra Training, looking for a structured training solution that would address the gaps, boost staff confidence, and ultimately improve the care delivered to residents. They needed more than just box-ticking compliance – they needed a partner who could support a meaningful shift in practice and culture.

Our Response

We acted quickly. Within one working day, our team provided a comprehensive, bespoke training plan designed to meet the care home’s specific needs and align with the CQC’s concerns. The plan covered a wide range of essential topics, ensuring a well-rounded programme supporting regulatory compliance and day-to-day care quality.

The training included First Aid to ensure staff could respond confidently in medical emergencies, and Fire Safety training to improve emergency preparedness and meet legislative standards. We also focused heavily on Resident Safety, delivering sessions on Safeguarding and Falls Prevention to protect vulnerable residents and prevent avoidable incidents.

To address the physical demands of care work and reduce the risk of injury, we included training on the Moving and Handling of People, helping staff carry out their roles safely and with greater confidence. Recognising the clinical responsibilities within the home, we also delivered clinical skills training, including sessions on Catheter Care, Venepuncture, and other procedures relevant to their residents’ needs.

Understanding the importance of maintaining continuity of care, we structured the delivery over three months. Training was scheduled weekly, allowing for full staff participation without disrupting day-to-day operations. This approach provided flexibility while ensuring that no area of the home was left unsupported during training delivery.

The Results

The training programme has now been fully completed, and early outcomes have been extremely positive. Staff across the care home reported feeling far more confident and supported in their roles. Many shared that they finally felt equipped with the knowledge and skills they’d previously lacked, and there was a renewed sense of pride in the quality of care being delivered.

Beyond individual confidence, the leadership team observed clear improvements in morale, communication, and teamwork. There’s a noticeable shift in the culture of the home, staff are more engaged, more proactive, and more united in their shared goal of delivering excellent care.

While the care home is still awaiting a follow-up visit from the CQC, internal audits and resident feedback already point to significant progress. The atmosphere has improved, safety standards are stronger, and there’s a collective sense of optimism about the future.

Looking Ahead

This project is a powerful example of what can be achieved when practical training is matched with genuine care and commitment. At Mantra Training, we’re incredibly proud to have supported this care home on its journey towards improvement and sustainability.

We look forward to hearing the results of their next CQC inspection and continuing to help care providers across the UK build more confident teams, safer environments, and stronger outcomes for those they care for.
